Areas & maps

Stamford is NOT on the state's recreational hotlines & maps list, and we found no official Stamford recreational-area map. The state classification for Stamford (effective Jan 1, 2024) says there are no Conditionally Approved growing areas in Stamford; the harbors and coves (Stamford Harbor, Tomac Cove, Dolphin Cove, Halloween Basin, Vincent Island, Holly Pond) are Prohibited; the shore west of Shippan Point and Westcott Cove/Cove Harbor are Restricted; the Stamford Harbor mooring area is Conditionally Restricted; the open Long Island Sound waters (now including outer Cove Harbor) are Approved. Never harvest in Prohibited/Restricted waters or leased beds. Call before going anywhere.

Statewide, any area closed for rain or sewage stays closed at least 7 days and reopens only after satisfactory state testing. If you use a Darien permit, Darien's waters close after a 3" rainfall (Darien hotline 203-838-9807).

Notes & sources

Nearest listed recreational option: Darien's town area on the eastern shore of Long Neck Point; Darien's permit form charges Stamford residents the Darien resident rate ($20, free 65+); Darien status line 203-838-9807. Stamford's Harbor Management Commission (203-977-5087) manages the harbor's shellfish; in 2026 the city adopted Ordinance No. 1332 moving the Shellfish Commission's authority to it (Board of Representatives item LR32.020, https://www.boardofreps.org/lr32020). Older 2020 details (fees, limits, residency, the 203-977-5889 line) come from the UConn Sea Grant guide that the state's hotlines page points to; they may be out of date. The state's online Aquaculture Mapping Atlas (recreational-beds layer, last edited Mar 27, 2026) still draws two Stamford town recreational beds, Cove Harbor and Westcott Cove, both labelled Restricted (0.5" rain trigger), where direct harvest is not allowed; ask the city whether any Stamford area is open to the public (https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/83d197010c7f4d5e8bf91ff4b1d877dc). The state DEEP list of shellfish commissions (Aug 2023) gave the Stamford Shellfish Commission as City Hall, 203-977-4140; that may have changed with Ordinance No. 1332. Minimum 7-day closure rule: CT DoAg Aquaculture FAQs (https://portal.ct.gov/doag/knowledge-base/articles/aquaculture/aquaculture-faqs). Researched Oct 23, 2026.
