Where to Go Clamming Near Norwalk, CT

Always call the town hotline before you go. Bed status changes after rain and for other public-health reasons, and the hotline (not this page) is the authoritative answer.

If you live in or near Norwalk, Connecticut, four nearby towns publish recreational shellfishing information: Norwalk itself, Darien to the west, and Westport and Fairfield to the east. Norwalk, Darien and Westport share one status hotline, 203-838-9807, because the Norwalk Health Department's rain gauge decides the status of conditional areas in all three towns under an agreement with the state Bureau of Aquaculture (Norwalk Health Dept).

Note: Norwalk's regulations are a scanned, undated one-page PDF that the Health Department links as current, so treat the details as "confirm before you go."

Darien

Westport

Fee: Permit fee: Listed on the 2026 application (not verified here) — call the Town Clerk or Conservation Dept. Westport says areas open and close periodically, mainly because of rainfall (Westport Shellfish Commission).

Fairfield

Beds: Conditionally approved growing area at Sasco Hill Beach (Fairfield map). Fees: Resident: $25; Senior 60+: $15; Non-resident: $50. Buy at Conservation Department, Sullivan Independence Hall, 725 Old Post Rd; online via town WebTrac. (Fairfield permits). Hotline 203-256-3074. Rain: >1.5" in 24 h; rainfall closures typically last at least 7 days. Only the Bureau of Aquaculture can open/close beds. (Fairfield bed status page). Fairfield also posts a bed-status graphic online, which we check twice a day; it is undated, so we never treat it as current on its own.

Before you go

  • Get the permit for the town where you will dig. A permit from one town does not cover another.
  • Bring a ring or gauge. Norwalk measures hard clams with a 1½″ inside-diameter ring and oysters with a 2¾″ ring.
  • Go in daylight. Norwalk and Darien both prohibit shellfishing between sunset and sunrise.
  • Expect closures after storms. Read Rain closures explained.
  • Check the state's hotline and map list (CT DoAg).

Not on this list: Stamford. We did not find a separate recreational program page for it, but Darien's permit form prices Darien and Stamford residents the same ($20).
